About Jay
Ten years in politics. Eight in pharma. Nearly a decade managing rental properties across Hamilton and Niagara. Here's how a bad experience with one property manager turned into a company built to never repeat his mistakes.
The Origin Story
In 2016, I hired a property manager for one of my rentals. Small things went wrong first — a maintenance request here, a slow response there. Then he fixed the wrong dryer in a duplex. Then, during a showing, he watched squirrels crawl into my attic through a gap in the soffit — and drove away without mentioning it.
I fired him two weeks later. Not because any single mistake was unforgivable, but because none of them seemed to bother him. He wasn't managing my property. He was collecting a fee.
I founded Welcome Home Management that year with a simple standard: manage every property the way I wished mine had been managed.
Before Real Estate
Property management wasn't my first career — it's where two earlier ones collided.
Career One
Ten years spent managing competing priorities where nobody fully agrees and everyone's watching. You learn to find solutions that work for people who don't trust each other yet — and to say exactly what you mean, because vague promises get remembered.
Career Two
Regulated, detail-heavy, zero tolerance for cutting corners. Eight years of learning that process isn't bureaucracy — it's what keeps a promise from depending on someone's memory or mood that day.
Career Three
Welcome Home Management runs on what both careers taught me: manage competing priorities, find solutions that work for everyone at the table, and never make a promise you won't keep.
How I Operate
Since 2016, I've earned my broker's licence, managed hundreds of tenancies, and sat across the table from landlords going through LTB hearings they should have won and didn't. That's given me a fairly unfiltered view of how property management actually works in Ontario — not how it's marketed.
I write about what I see on the Unfiltered page, because most people in this industry are careful about what they say publicly. I'm not particularly interested in careful.
"Manage competing priorities. Find solutions that work for everyone. Never make a promise you won't keep."
Whether you're a realtor with investor clients who need a property manager you can actually trust — or an owner who's ready to stop managing alone — I'll give you a straight answer.
